Colonial Office, S..

sir,

We have been approached by Mr James H. Backhouse

of Hongkong, who asks us whether we are disposed to act as agente in England for himself and Mr John Manners, who are setting up in general business under the style of Manners and Backhouse, Ltd.

Mr Backhouse was formerly in the employ of Sander Wieler & Co., with whom we did a very large trade in British piece goods before the War, and Mr Mannere was in a similar position with Siemesen & Co. Mr Backhouse is a Lancashire

man,

and we understand that Mr Manners is also a British sub- Ject. The capital of the firm, to be registered as a private limited company, is we are informed 100,000 (say £5,000) of which 65% is contributed in cash by Manners, and the re- mainder, also in cash, by Backhouse, The latter has a very thorough knowledge of the piece goods trade, with nine years experience in Hongkong, while Manners is a "aundries" and *produce" man, and we are told is agent for the Sun Insurance
